Blockbuster: Top Gun

Everyone Needs a Wingman

…a friend, mentors, community, team, because we all need coaching and accountability

“Maverick, it’s not your flying, it’s your attitude. The enemy’s dangerous. Right now you’re worse than the enemy. You’re dangerous and foolish. You may not like the guys flying with you, they may not like you. But whose side are you on?”
—“Iceman” in Top Gun (1986)

maverick / ‘mav-rik / n
an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party

Proverbs 27:17

Moses had Aaron, Exodus 4:27. Paul had Barnabas, Acts 13:2-3. Peter had John, Acts 3:1

TRYING TO DO IT ALONE IS LIKE:
walking when there’s a seat for you on the bus
crossing a river to get water
making 3 right turns instead of 1 left
pushing water … uphill … with a rake!

Everyone needs to be a wingman!

Paul had Barnabas as wingman. Then Barnabas went on his own to Cyprus, taking Mark with him. Acts 15:39-40

wingman / ‘wing-man / n
a pilot who supports another in a potentially dangerous flying environment

Failures are growth opportunities

Never underestimate the power of persistence!

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. — Calvin Coolidge

Luke 22:32

When properly handled, our failures and mistakes make us stronger!

Footloose – Time to Dance

Ecclesiastes 3:1-4

The movie Footloose is loosely based on true story from 1980 Elmore City, OK which had prohibited dancing since town was founded in 1861. In the fictitious town of the movie, the ordinance banning dancing was part of the reaction to a horrible drunk-driving accident that killed several teens 5 years earlier.

“At first I was afraid they wouldn’t know what to do, but when the music started, all my worries went away – which means it wasn’t their first dance!”
Principal Dean Worsham, Elmore City High School

Be careful you don’t buy into an isolationist false sense of security.

MAILING IT IN

giving token effort, band-aids instead of solutions, “lip service” or going through the motions.

[ctt template=”3″ link=”zS9fR” via=”no” ]There is no autopilot in parenting. [/ctt]

Rules alone aren’t parenting, just telling God our problems isn’t social justice, witnessing isn’t just wearing a t-shirt, etc.

WHAT IS MISSING?

“How come when I’m home you’re never as interested in what I do or say as you are when I walk out that door? Wham! Suddenly you wanna know everything!” — “Ariel” in Footloose (1984)

Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:19, Acts 1:8, Luke 10:9, Isaiah 1:17, Isaiah 58:7, Luke 3:11, Romans 12:15

“Certainly, if the problem is to be solved then in the final sense, hearts must be changed.” Martin Luther King, Jr

[ctt template=”3″ link=”yacfS” via=”no” ]Change may begin with a law, but it will never be complete until it involves the heart![/ctt]

BETTER IS POSSIBLE

When we begin “mailing it in” as a parent, spouse, neighbor, Christian, it is the beginning of ceasing to be a parent, husband/wife, etc.

Isolation only works for as long as the isolation remains in effect. Insulation can be taken by your kids wherever they go for the rest of their life.

Teach your children to deal with their passions, not ignore them.

“Shaw, it’s 20 years now I’ve been a minister’s wife. And I’ve been quiet, supportive, unobtrusive; and after 20 years I still think you’re a wonderful, wonderful preacher. You can lift a congregation up so high they have to look down to see Heaven. But it’s the one-to-one where you need a little work.” — “Vi” in Footloose (1984)

There is a time to write a check, a time to roll up your sleeves and a time to do both.

As a Christian you can’t mail it in, you have to live it out on a daily basis, and on a weekly basis at God’s altar. Our faith needs to be practiced in worship, at prayer, and in service. When those things fall into place, you will discover the joy of being a Christian.
Christiane Janssen

Too often we go for a quick fix instead of a solution.

If we want to be great parents, spouses, neighbors or Christians it takes consistency, not mailing it in, not lip service, but keeping our actions consistent with our words. And not just in what we believe is wrong for us but also what is right for us to be doing!

Let’s declare this Summer, it’s “time to dance!”

If you want to be saved and become a follower of Jesus it’s very simple. Jesus has already done the hard work by dying for our sins. All we have to do is believe Jesus is exactly who He says He is, the Son of God who died for our sins and rose again on the 3rd day. And tell someone. You can tell a spouse, parent, best friend, or you can text us at 205-476-2911. Romans 10:9-10

…Who?

Who is your 5+1?

James 5:16

[ctt template=”3″ link=”DaZU2″ via=”no” ]You need someone in your life that you have given the freedom to say to you, “That’s stupid.”[/ctt]

 Neighboringdoing things a neighbor does

Luke 10:30-37

[ctt template=”3″ link=”WD4Ea” via=”no” ]According to the moral of this parable, “neighboring” is equivalent to showing mercy.[/ctt]

Gather with a sense of urgency

Andrew first went to find his brother Simon – John 1:41
Phillip found Nathanael – John 1:45
JTB sent his disciples to Jesus – John 1:36-37
The Samaritan woman – John 4:28-30

Let me says this. Old relationships must change, as in don’t keep doing drugs, getting drunk, having illicit sex, etc. The relationships that must end are the ones you can’t change. If you cut off all your old friendships you’ll have no one to reach for Jesus. Your friends from before you knew Jesus are THE first people to invite to your baptism!

If you are a Christian who has never been baptized, text “baptism” to 205-476-2911. We will send you the info you need to help you understand and decide.

– Who is in church this morning because of you?

– Who was in a small group last semester because of you?

– Who will be in church next week because of you?

– Who will be in a small group this semester because of you?

If it is important to you, you’ll find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse.

…What?

Article: Story of the catacombs

“The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.”
William Ross Wallace (1819-1881)

Three lies we need to stop buying into:
1. If we stand against sin we are judgmental and unloving.
2. Too much Jesus will turn my children away from Him.
3. I am only one mother. How can I change the world?

1 Samuel 3: 11-14 Samuel heard God

1 Samuel 3:18 Samuel stood against sin

1 Samuel 7:3-4 Samuel turned Israel back to God

Prayer – Changing the world starts on our knees

The Word of God is active and powerful enough to bring breakthrough, healing, and freedom in every area of your life and your family!

Church – In His presence we find all we need

Mark 14:3-9

Or…

BELIEVER OR FOLLOWER
(they aren’t the same thing!)

Believing in a doctrine in your head is quite a different thing from determining to live your life a certain way.
Rob Grayson

Luke 9:57-62

John 3:16 – “believing into Jesus!”

You can’t really say you believe in Jesus and continue to lie, cheat, steal.
…or talk to a waitress anyway you want.
…or give everyone a piece of your mind, or 20% of your hand.
…or not be a woman or man of your word.

[ctt template=”3″ link=”HTGb9″ via=”no” ]Believers know God’s ways are awesome – Followers live by them[/ctt]

Believers pray when things get tough – Followers talk to God regularly

Believing is in the head – Following is feet that are going, hands that are reaching and helping, arms that are protecting and working, a heart that is caring, loving and sharing

TITLES OR TOWELS

John 13:4-5

A Title tells people who you are. A Towel shows them!

Before the cross the disciples were all about Titles.
Afterwards they were all about Towels!
Mark 10:35-41, John 21:21-22, Acts 12:1-2
Whatever Happened To The 12 Apostles?

[ctt template=”3″ link=”6E5e6″ via=”no” ]When you are a Christian it’s not about the TITLE but the TOWEL. John 13:4-5[/ctt]

WORKING OR SERVING

John 12:4-6

When you work you have another motive, like a payday, coercion…
Serving is all about the act of serving itself.

What we’re talking about is making the connection between the sweat & tears and people.

GIVING OR INVESTING

2 Kings 4:8-37

  • The more precious the commodity you’re investing the greater the return. So always give your best, give yourself!
  • Don’t be satisfied visiting with Jesus. Create space for Him to move in!
  • Is Jesus comfortable at your house, in your life?
  • Just having Jesus around creates opportunity!
  • Abundant results don’t come from skimpy investments.
The place she prepared and provided for someone else became the place of her 2nd miracle!

You can give your money without giving yourself.
You can give your time, talents, effort, even your life without giving yourself.
But you cannot give yourself without giving all the above!

I’m not giving an offering. I’m investing in miracles!

…How? – part 2

If it is important to you, you’ll find a way.
If not, you’ll find an excuse.

IN AN AVERAGE LIFETIME WE SPEND:
17 years trying to lose weight
9 years watching tv
4 years eating
3 years washing clothes
1½ years in the bathroom
And half the population spends 8 years shopping

For many people, God only gets their leftovers – and there isn’t much leftover.

When everything is about me, eventually I’ll hit a dead end, or won’t have the answer, get burned out, my victories become less satisfying, my successes are no longer fulfilling!

Studies prove being a committed part of a local church is good for you, your marriage, your kids, finances, emotional health, inner peace, outlook on life, even your physical health!

“The Church is God’s primary design for your spiritual growth and well-being!”
Nathan Rose

We need other Christians—their example, model, and prayers
We need opportunities to discover and use our gifts and talents
We need to worship together
We need to connect in small groups where we can learn, grow and serve together
We need the chance to impact on a scale larger than our individual efforts can accomplish
We need accountability
We need to be challenged
We need grace – there is no better place to learn, receive AND GIVE grace!

Remember, God isn’t “A” spoke, He’s “THE” hub.

  • Read the Bible daily
  • Pray constantly
  • Fast to keep focus
  • Make space to hear God
  • Commit to a local church

…How? — part 1

Four ordinary things that release the extraordinary: Read & Pray & Fast & Listen

Why the Bible? God knows stuff I don’t know!

[ctt template=”3″ link=”19O7A” via=”no” ]God knows right now what I need tomorrow![/ctt]

The greatest prayer wasn’t answered, Luke 22:42 – or was it?

[ctt template=”3″ link=”4c3Z5″ via=”no” ]Perhaps God is praying something over you more awesome than you can imagine![/ctt]

Fasting is about me – about me getting my focus off of me and seeing others around me!

Isaiah 58:6-7

Listen – Consider Noah. He didn’t just hear an idea, he heard every spec of the building plan! And saved his family!

HOW TO HEAR GOD:
The Bible helps since the more we hear His voice the more we’ll recognize it.
Praying helps as a focus, to make a connection.
Fasting helps us keep unimportant voices separate from THE important voice.
Listening helps create the opportunity for communication.
Remember that Jesus is in you, John 14:20-23.

If it is important to you, you’ll find a way.
If not, you’ll find an excuse.

…Next?

Hebrews 11:6

John 3:16

Jesus is the only One who died for you!

Ephesians 2:8, Romans 6:23, 2 Corinthians 9:15, Romans 5:16, Romans 3:23-24

Because of Jesus’ death, salvation is free!

Isaiah 5:1-4

Faith is the beginning, and the only requirement for salvation because it’s free. Now let’s build something!

Galatians 6:9

Matthew 6:25-33

What it means to seek His kingdom:
seek His will in all things, Romans 14:17
seek His will in our actions, Matthew 5:3-10
be part of His kingdom, Matthew 6:10
live by God’s power, 1 Corinthians 4:20

What is righteousness?
the quality of being morally right
acting in accord with divine or moral law
genuine, excellent
