Power week 3 – Living It

1 Chronicles 29:11

Stop walking like you’re lost, talking like you’re defeated, praying without hope, planning without expectation!

2 Chronicles 29:11

Psalm 29:11

Jeremiah 29:11

[ctt template=”3″ link=”28kyn” via=”no” ]With God there is no accident, coincidence or luck. There is a plan![/ctt]

How will God execute the plan? Not by dreaming, hoping and talking, but by acting, doing—by His power!

Romans 10:17

Genesis 1:2

Survey a few instances of the power of God in the Bible:

Genesis 12:1-3

1 Kings 18:42-45

2 Kings 6:8-12

Luke 4:14 and Acts 10:38

[ctt template=”3″ link=”0527e” via=”no” ]People must first see His love in us before they will receive His power for themselves![/ctt]

Mark 1:30-31

Luke 19:30 and Luke 22:7-13

Acts 2:38-39

Acts 23:11 and Acts 27:24

1 Corinthians 12:7-10

God has already done everything needed and entrusted it to us!

Where is God? Power, week 2

A few weeks ago in D.C. Dava and I saw the thousands of graves at Arlington cemetery, the constant reminders of slavery, the horrors of the Holocaust museum, then returned home to news about human trafficking and the Las Vegas shooting.

What if God has already done everything needed to bring peace into this world? And then entrusted it to us?

John 9:4-5, Matthew 5:14

So maybe the real question should be “Where are we?“ Perhaps the world isn’t such a dark place because God seems absent, but perhaps it’s because we are!

We want and need God’s power in our lives
               Luke 10:19
               Mark 16:15-18

But if we want to walk in God’s amazing power we must also walk in the power of love!
               John 13:35

What is the purpose of God’s power?

We see several places in the New Testament where people wanted Jesus to perform miracles like parlor tricks. Surely this isn’t the purpose of God’s power!

Jesus gave His disciples power in Luke 10 (see above) when He sent them to prepare His way, to reach those who had not yet heard of Him, to bless and heal.

The power Jesus spoke about in Mark 16 (see above) was part of the Great Commission, it was about reaching the world!

Luke 14:21-23

John 1:12

The Great Pumpkin Bash on October 31st!

5 obvious whys…

Feed a hungry child

Give busy families a safe place to be together

Let kids see their parents laugh for the first time in months

Be the example to an abusive parent

Be Jesus to our community!

4 deeper whys…

1. This is who we are as 29:11, part of what we see as our unique calling. Most of the time in the church world we’ve done events for ourselves and invited the community to join us. This is an event we host for the community, for their needs, for their families.

2. This is what it took to reach us and it will take the same selflessness to reach others! If you are a Christian today it’s because someone put you ahead of themselves!

3. This is how Jesus did it. He didn’t just preach about & forgive sin. Jesus met people’s needs, sometimes by teaching, sometimes by blessing, sometimes by healing & sometimes even feeding them!

4. This selfless serving is the most effective means of connecting people with Jesus. Remember the old saying, “People don’t care what you know until they know that you care.”

John 14:10-17

Power: Part One – The Greatest Power

The greatest, best, most-needed power?

Luke 10:1-20

The greatest power is not healing, not miracles, not financial blessings, not even that evil spirits are subject to us through the name of Jesus.

1. Healing, financial blessings, provision, freedom, deliverance, protection, etc are at best lifelong miracles. Salvation is all of those for eternity!

2. Salvation is the most amazing miracle of all!

[ctt template=”3″ link=”Fd5d0″ via=”no” ]Healing, financial blessings, provision, freedom, protection, etc are at best lifelong miracles. Salvation is all of those for eternity![/ctt]

 John 1:13, 3:6

This new birth as a symbol of salvation in Jesus denotes a new beginning, not starting over, but starting something brand new, a different way of living, a better life!

Adoption – Galatians 4:6-7, Romans 8:14-17, Ephesians 1:5

Forgiveness – 1 John 1:9, Acts 3:19, Hebrews 8:12

Freedom – John 8:35-36

3. Salvation is the first time the power of God operates in our lives.

Acts 2:38-39

Romans 10:9-10

How To… Worship

Thanksgiving – think “gratitude” or “appreciation”

Praise – think “honor” or “acknowledging”

Worship is: the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration

[ctt template=”3″ link=”485Q1″ via=”no” ]Worship doesn’t satisfy your appetite. Worship intensifies your appetite for the object of your worship![/ctt]

Worship doesn’t just cause you to notice the good things about God. Worship, especially of God, causes you to imitate Him!

So what is Worship?

[ctt template=”3″ link=”893PT” via=”yes” ]Worship isn’t something you sing on Sunday morning.[/ctt]

  • Prayer is worship – Matthew 6:9
  • Reading the Bible is worship – John 4:24
How can we worship in truth if we don’t know truth?
  • Giving is worship – Matthew 6:21, Matthew 2:11, Malachi 3:10-12
If you want to know what you worship, look at your calendar and your bank statement.
  • An attitude of gratitude is worship, appreciation instead of grumbling and complaining
  • Saying grace over meals is worship
  • Serving others is worship – Matthew 25:40
  • Sharing our faith is worship!
  • Obedience is worship
Imagine a king is speaking to you. What would be a respectful and reverent response?
Ignoring him or listening and obeying?
  • Living the amazing life God dreams for us is worship

Romans 12:1

Finally, yes, singing can be worship. But only if it begins in the soul!

[ctt template=”3″ link=”TC25a” via=”yes” ]At 29:11 we don’t do guitar solos[/ctt]

How To… Dream Big

Why did God give you and I an imagination?

Ephesians 3:20 ESV
Ephesians 3:20 MSG

Why would God speak to us in dreams?

Acts 2:17

Psalm 33:11

If an imagination is thinking without limitations and dreaming is God communicating to us without limitation then having a dream is learning to live without limitation.

Romans 8:10-12

Proverbs 19:21

Big dreams are lived out in little ways every day.

Psalm 90:12

1 Corinthians 12:12

“God sets the lonely in families…” Psalm 68:6

How To… Communicate With God

7 Prayers I am Praying Over My Church in 2017

  1. Remind us, it begins right here!
  2. Help us take our commitment to finance and otherwise support our mission more seriously
  3. Help us reach the next 180 who need to know Jesus
  4. Lead each one of us to Own Our Growth
  5. Lead us to welcome discipleship from one another
  6. Open more doors in more communities and bless us with the necessary means to reach them!
  7. Give us greater impact in our communities in 2017

We are not spending a half hour sermon on prayer today because communicating with God is difficult. We are taking this half hour because of the importance of prayer!

How the Bible teaches us to pray:

Matthew 6:9

Hebrews 4:16

1 Thessalonians 5:17 & Ephesians 6:18

Psalm 5:3 & James 1:6-7

James 2:26 & Jeremiah 32:16

For many Christians, prayer has become an escape from responsibility. Rather, prayer should lead us into the very acts and exploits for our God.
– Jan Willem van der Hoeven

Isaiah 58:6-7

James 5:16

2 Kings 19:14-16

Jesus on How To Communicate with God: Matthew 6:9-13

Slow down and do some dialoguing with God!

How To… Own Your Growth

I Corinthians 9:24-27

John 5:14 and 8:11

A lesson from physical therapy: Push up to the pain then focus on strengthening the other areas of your life.

When you don’t own your growth…
life chooses your battles,
circumstances choose the arena,
your enemies choose the weapons
and your preparation chooses the outcome!

What are you doing under the circumstances?
– Carman Licciardello

Romans 12:2-6

1 Corinthians 12:12-27

When we struggle, the first tendency is to disconnect. Because we don’t want to talk about it. We’re embarrassed we have problems. We often just don’t want to deal with it.

Jesus said He is a vine and we are the branches of that vine. God gave us His Family, the church, the Body to do life together not alone.

John 15:1-8

When we struggle, a second tendency is to focus inward.

Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30 and Matthew 6:31-33 if we want His help, to focus on others. But when we need His help we often do the exact opposite!

When you and your problems are the biggest thing in your life, everything is major!

The Upside Down Kingdom

When we are struggling we need to be “solving” other people’s problems, ministering to their needs, etc.

How To serve even when you struggle – watch this video!

Four areas: Prayer, Bible, Giving, Reach

The Bible doesn’t say much about endings.

Jesus said He will be with us forever and even His words will never pass away. When Paul talked about his purpose being finished on the earth he went straight into what was next, not an ending, just a transition!

Matt 28:20, Matt 24:35, 2 Tim 4:7-8

But the Bible does speak a lot about beginnings!

Genesis 1:1 & John 1:1 “In the beginning…”
John 2:11 “This beginning of signs…”
John 8:44 even tells us about Satan’s beginning, that “he was a murderer”
John 3:3 Jesus tells Nicodemus, and us, about a New Birth
And the prophet Zechariah tells us to not “despise small beginnings…” Zech 4:10

Jesus told Simon Peter to take the 1st step out of the boat and another time to cast his net before he caught any fish. Jesus healed a blind man by sending him to wash his eyes before his sight was restored. Elisha told Naaman to dip in the river before he was healed. And we are told to give and if we do, afterwards, – NOT BEFORE – “good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap”!

Matt 14:29, John 21:6, John 9:7, 2 Kings 5:14, Luke 6:38

Just like these today who are choosing to be obedient in baptism. Baptism is the first command we have once we begin to follow Jesus!

Matthew 28:19, Acts 2:38, Acts 10:48, Acts 13:24, Acts 22:16

The story of the Vineyard Workers

Matthew 20:1-16

It doesn’t matter WHEN you begin, just that you don’t wait any longer to do so!

How To… Own Your Reach

Matthew 13:3-8

If you want to fulfill the Great Commission, help reach the world and impact generations

If you want to reach your friends and the 20k+ in our communities not affiliated with any church,

If you want to reach every member of your family!

Acts 16:30 -34

Acts 11:13-14, John 4:46-53, Joshua 2:1-20, 6:22-25

24/7/52 Consistency

Hypocrisy is one of the most often used excuses people give for not attending church!

James 3:6-12

If you want to reach your community you can’t worship Jesus on Sunday morning and bless out the waitress on Sunday afternoon.

If you want to reach your family you can’t amen the preacher today then live something else the rest of the week.

[ctt template=”3″ link=”8cd32″ via=”no” ]If you want to reach your friends you can’t tell everyone “I’m blessed” at church then whine about everything in your life on facebook.[/ctt]

Be Real

[ctt template=”3″ link=”oV974″ via=”no” ]People who don’t know Jesus see what Christianity looks like while watching you.[/ctt]

Share Jesus

You don’t need a 15lb KJV Bible & a streetcorner to share the love of Jesus!

[ctt template=”3″ link=”j37Ga” via=”no” ]“Everyone should attend a church they brag about!”[/ctt]

Have a sense of urgency

Mark 13:31-33, Acts 1:11, 1 Corinthians 7:29, Romans 13:11, 1 Peter 4:7

Why the urgency?

7,195 people will die in the US today, and tomorrow, and every day after that!
