Is It Serious?

Have you ever been asked to do something that you thought was just plain silly? Did you do it?

Much of western Christianity today is nothing more than a side interest.
Many keep their relationship with Jesus very casual.

Consider BAPTISM

We have direction: Matthew 28:19, Acts 2:38

We have examples: Matthew 3:16, Acts 22:16, Acts 8:36-38, Acts 16:15, Matthew 3:6, Acts 16:33, Acts 19:4-5, Acts 8:12, Acts 8:13, Luke 3:12, Acts 10:48, 1 Corinthians 1:16

We have explanation: Romans 6:3-4, Galatians 3:27, 1 Corinthians 12:13, Mark 16:16

Scripture is abundant with references to baptism. It’s what our Christian family does!

Baptism says…
I have repented of my sin and turned to God for forgiveness. See Mark 1:4
I want the world to know this is my family!
This is serious and I want to be obedient!

Consider TITHING

Proportional giving goes all the way back to Cain and Abel. See Genesis 4:3-5

The amount of 10% goes all the way back to Abraham. See Genesis 14:20

This 10%, the tithe (meaning tenth) was the standard for God’s people.
It was part of the Old Testament Law. See Numbers 18:25-29, Leviticus 27:30-32, Deuteronomy 12:6-11, 14:22-23
It was in practice later, during the time of the kings. See 2 Chronicles 31:5-12
…and centuries later, after their captivity. See Nehemiah 10:37-38, 13:12
…and during the time of Jesus and after. See Luke 18:12, Hebrews 7:8-9

Jesus said we should tithe. See Luke 11:42

Tithing says “I am part of this ministry, I want to see it thrive and reach more people who need to know Jesus!” See Malachi 3:10-12

Consider EVANGELISM

Evangelism is not just a good idea but a necessity!

To reach others for Jesus is a command. See Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8

Telling others about Jesus is a natural outflow of the joy, peace and love in your heart!

Consider RIGHTEOUSNESS

Psalm 101

Consider PRAYER

We have been given the opportunity of prayer – Hebrews 4:16

We have been given power in prayer – Mark 9:29, James 5:14-16, Matthew 18:19

We have been given instruction on prayer – “Pray like this…” Matthew 6:9-13
See also Philippians 4:6, Mark 11:24, Matthew 6:6, Colossians 4:2, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, 2 Chronicles 7:14, Ephesians 6:18, James 4:3, 1 John 5:14-15

God left only one thing to chance concerning prayer. See James 4:2
